We love Nature

Every one of us understands that there is a need to protect our environment and realizes the importance of planting trees. But only few people have the determination to translate these thoughts into actions. We are very fortunate to have one such passionate, zealous, committed and selfless Nature Lover amongst us. He is none other than our beloved Dr. M Rama Murthy, Head of the Zoology Dept. He was the master mind behind the inception of Penguin Nature Club in 1986 which was affiliated to WWF-India. Penguin Nature Club involved the students of BVK College and took up plantation work in and around the college.

The saying, ‘behind every successful man, there is a woman’, is true for Dr. Rama Murthy and his wife Mrs. Mangathayi. Dr. Murthy felt that Penguin Nature Club is restricted in its activities as it is limited to BVK Students. Then, Mrs. Mangathayi suggested that they start the ‘Dolphin Nature Conservation Society (DNCS)’, with membership open to all. Consequently, DNCS was established in 2001 with an agenda to motivate youngsters towards tree plantation, environmental conservation and protection.
Focusing on expanding the work, Dr Murthy found the area of his dreams in Rani Chandramathi Devi hospital for the disabled. After loads of hard work, requests ad permissions, the city’s first bio-diversity park took shape. Covering an area of about 5 acres, there are about 2000 species of medicinal, aromatic, ornamental, cacti, gymnosperms, aquatic plants and other rare and uncommon varieties. Through DNCS, Dr Murthy also conducted several workshops, exhibitions, intercollegiate competitions and seminars, organized nature study tours and rallies to create awareness among the youth about nature conservation. Penguin Nature Club received the “Best Nature Club of the millenium-2000” award at state level by WWF-India and “Best Environmental Protection Award” from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India. DNCS received the “Krushi-Nature protection Award” from Krushi Orthopedic society, Visakhapatnam.

Pranams to Dr. Murthy who made our college an outstanding one for its Nature Conservation activities that got recognition both at the state and National Level. I am sure many of our Alumni members can identify themselves as past volunteers of the Penguin Nature club and DNCS. I request every one to extend your support to this wonderful organization and become a part of Environmental Protection. For more details contact Dr M. Ramamurthy at dncs.india@gmail.com

Dr. Pantula Rama

Practice makes perfect is the statement truly believed by the renowned Musician Smt. Pantula Rama. Any milestone in Music can be achieved undoubtedly through Sadhana or continuous effort. Smt. Pantula Rama is the first female full time scholar to pursue PhD in Music in Andhra University. Her dissertation topic was “Shaping an ideal Karnatic Musician through sadhana”. Her parents are also renowned Musicians. Her father Sri Pantula Gopala Rao is a famous Violin and Mridangam Player. Her mother Smt. Pantula Padmavathi is an eminent Veena Artist. Coming from such a strong Karnatic background, it is of little surprise that she began singing at an age of four.

She learnt music at home from her parents and also pursued violin from Sri Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao, a well-known Violin Player. Thus, she became proficient in both Violin and Vocal. These days, many young students aspire to become Engineers or Doctors but Rama gave up her seat in medicine to pursue music. She has done B.A in Music in BVK College and completed M.A and PhD in Andhra University. She expresses her gratitude to the then Head of the Department of Music in AU, Smt Gouri Ram Mohan for her support.

As part of her Research work, she met many eminent Musicians like Sri Nedunuri Krishna Murthy, Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, Sri M S Gopala Krishnan, Sri Dwaram Durga Prasada Rao, Sri N Ramani and so on and understood the dos and don’ts of sadhana. She took into consideration the importance of Sadhana in mythology also. She came to a conclusion that Sadhana does not mean physical effort alone but includes emotional and spiritual aspects too.

Rama staged several concerts through out the country and gave performances in TV and Radio shows too. She received the annual best Karnatic Musician award for the year 1998 from the then Chief Minister Sri Chandra Babu Naidu. Madras Music Academy felicitated her with an “Outstanding Musician Award” in 2006. Her life Partner Sri Srinivasa Narasimha Murthy is also a renowned musician and is employed as top grade Violinist in All India Radio, Visakhapatnam Kendra.

On behalf of BVK Alumni, we are very proud to introduce such an eminent musician and we wish her the very best in all her endeavors.

Smt Ganiya Raja Kumari

Where there is a will, there is a way is true for Smt. Raja Kumari who is serving as a Sub-registrar for Vizianagaram District co-operative society. She secured 490 marks in Group-1 Exams and secured 5th place in the women’s category. She is selected as Deputy Collector. Many are under the impression that “Vivaham vidya naashaaya”, but Raja Kumari proved that this is not accurate. After her marriage to Sri Srihari who is a teacher in Bhimavaram, she pursued Group 1 in 2008 and became the Sub-registrar for District co-operative society. That did not satisfy her. She worked hard and became a topper in Group 1 in 2009. She says that she wants to pursue Civil Services and get selected for the same. She proudly says that her husband and in-laws support her whole heartedly in achieving her goals.

If we look at her Academic Achievements, she is a state ranker in 10th grade from AP Guru Kula Patasala with 534 marks, College Topper in Intermediate (Bi.P.C) from APRJC College in Thatipudi, AU Topper in B.Sc (CBZ) from BVK College, Visakhapatnam, All India 8th ranker in M.Sc (Animal Science) from Central University, Hyderabad and PhD as she qualified through UGC Net.

When asked why she chose Group 1 after pursuing PhD, she mentioned that it has been her father’s aspiration to be a responsible Government employee and hence, she took it up and succeeded in the very first attempt to become the sub-registrar. In a second attempt, she is now the Deputy Collector and she want to take her dream further to become selected in All India Civil Services.

Smt Raja Kumari hails from a family of farmers and this is the reason she says that she can readily identify the problems of a common man. She wants to be available at every possible juncture and help in solving the issues.

She made all of us very proud and we sincerely believe that she becomes a role model for our students. On behalf of the Alumni we wish her very best in all her endeavours.
